HOW TO WRITE YOUR TIB BIO (Click on the link!!!) How to record your TIB and bio from home if you have GarageBand
This spring we will be thinking about belief in many different ways: through established religions, but also by looking at, reading, and listening to essays about people's personal beliefs. You will eventually write about what you believe in. Before that, each student will choose an essay to present to the class.

"This I Believe is based on a 1950s radio program of the same name, hosted by acclaimed journalist Edward R. Murrow. Each day, Americans gathered by their radios to hear compelling essays from the likes of Eleanor Roosevelt, Jackie Robinson, Helen Keller, and Harry Truman as well as corporate leaders, cab drivers, scientists, and secretaries—anyone able to distill into a few minutes the guiding principles by which they lived. These essayists’ words brought comfort and inspiration to a country worried about the Cold War, McCarthyism, and racial division." [http://thisibelieve.org/]

Due: The Day You Present!
This I Believe Presentation Schedule
Below you will find a calendar of our classwork and homework on this project. The most recent work will be at the top.
Due Monday 5/9
1) Read over the suggestions, questions, and comments given by your editor. You do not have to follow all of them, but please consider them and make edits.
2) Then (after you edit!) complete the Backwards Outline Self Editing. Double-sided sheets were handed out in class but you can download the document if you need extra or want to work on the computer.
Note: You MUST turn in your first draft, the peer editing sheet, your backwards outline sheets and your newest draft. If you do not turn in all of these pieces, your work will be considered incomplete and you will be in study hall.
Thursday 5/5: Peer Editing
Tuesday 5/3: Writing! Finally! Read the instructions below:
Today in class you will start working on your TIB essay. We have done a lot of brainstorming, thinking, and sharing about possible topics and ideas. You might write a draft, you might write several attempts at a draft, you might write a draft and revise it. It's up to you what steps you need to take (you can talk to me if you need help), but you need to work on this for the whole period!
You should have a draft ready for peer editing on Thursday, May 5th. Your finished product will be between 400 and 500 words, which is about four to six paragraphs.
Here are some guidelines to remember when you begin writing your essay. These may be different than what you usually are asked to do in school assignments, but this is a different kind of essay.
1. It’s all about you: Write about you and your thoughts. Tell us your
story in the first person, and try to avoid sentences like “We feel this
way.”
2. Keep it personal: Don’t try to use words or phrases you wouldn’t
normally say. Remember, if you wouldn’t be comfortable saying the
words out loud, or if you can't define the words without a dictionary, it is probably too formal.
3. Timing is everything: Make sure that you read your finished essay out
loud. It shouldn’t be more than three minutes long when read at a
normal speaking rate.
4. Say what you do believe, not what you don’t: Write about what you
think, but not at the expense of others. Keep the focus on you, and what
you believe, not what you disagree with.
5. Have fun! How many times are you allowed to be 100% free with your
choice of topic, and what you want to say about it? This is your chance
to write about your personal philosophy of life, so don’t be shy—let it out!
Due Monday 5/2: Topic Brainstorm
Wednesday, April 27, 2011: Backwards Outlining
Today in class we listened to and read a TIB essay together. We then deconstructed the essay by creating a backwards outline together as a class. Then you created backwards outlines of other essays. If you did not finish this work in class, please do so for homework.
